Local Quartets:  Good Intentions

March Edition 2003

A publication of the Northland Barbershop Chorus of Sault Ste. Marie

This edition is dedicated to the memory of Barney Coulter " Friend"

Ladies Night

A fine evening of fellowship, entertainment and good food was served up once again as the members with their significant others met in the annual recognition of the ladies who stand behind their men on the risers. Congratulations to the new slate of officers. The rest of the chorus now waits to hear how they can best serve with this fine group of gentlemen. Congratulations to AI Toivanen on the well deserved "Barbershopper of the Year" award.

Thanks to Ed Cloutier, who as MC for the event, kept the pace moving. The only complaint was the fact there were no "Eddy" jokes.

Many thanks to Doug lies for this well planned evening.

Show time

Once again, Show time is just around the corner and it is the time for the individual members to do their thing. The directors, teaching quartets and section leaders have brought us as far as they can. We now have to practice our parts and memorize. This is what we signed up for and this is what we do best. Perfonn.

Performance Attire

Remember, proper fitting performance attire will give us that professional appearance.

Notify AI Toivanen for fitting.

Barney Coulter

The recent passing of our friend and colleague will leave a void in each of our lives for some time to come. Barney will be remembered for his grit and determination to live as normal a life as possible under extremely trying circumstances.

I remember Barney as he walked into practice that night 25 years ago. Barbershopping immediately became a big part of his life and has continued to this day.

Barney has been a constant on the executive -too many years to count. Barney loved to recruit new members and would ask anyone anywhere - while he was laying on a stretcher in a hospital waiting room, for one example.

Barney loved to sell show tickets; his familiar quote was "I like to give everybody an opportunity to say no", Barney found it more and more difficult to concentrate the last few months, but he was determined to remain a part of the fellowship as long as possible. He and his wife Mabel became an inspiration for us all.

The Bible says we should "fight the good fight" .Barney fought the good fight every day. I believe he won.
